January 26th was the last time I wrote about the RememberTheMilk-Eclipse plugin. That day I uploaded the code to googlecode. After that day I did not find time to go ahead with developing and extending the plugin.

Oliver Tönse wrote in a comment: but I only found quite ancient sources at googlecode which don’t seem to compile against current mylyn versions.

I wrote the plugin against the codebase of Mylyn of december 2007. In the meantime it certainly is changed.

For the comming 3 months I don’t see myself working again on this plugin. So if there are volenteers to go ahead or takeover the responsitibility for this, please contact me. The code is already published to googlecode, you can get access to commit to the repository as well.

Next to that I also uploaded the code I have already now and I have created a mailinglist (using Google for that).

If anyone like to join, please feel free. I like to share this with all of you.

What I have done so far:
There are 2 projects: one for the core and one for the UI (that is how Mylyn recommends it).
It is possible to create a Mylyn repository connection. Also all communication is handled by use of the java library written by http://rtmjava.sourceforge.net/ (I have made a little change to that which needs to be backported to rtmjava). It is already possible to define queries and to download the tasks and to open them.

Steps to be taken:
Publish changes in tasks back to RememberTheMilk.
Polish and test.

Here again an update about the progress. I am able to download the tasks and to show them in the list. I can edit tasks as well. Now the synchronization back needs to be done. No screenshots this time, I will post them next time.

In the meantime I am also looking to a place where to store the sources. It is my plan to make it public available so everyone can contribute and it can be part of the optional repository plugins for Mylyn.
Has anyone a good idea about where to store it? I like to hear ideas about it.

RTM Task query

Next step after the creation of the repository is creating a task query. The query for RememberTheMilk tasks looks the same as all task queries for BugZilla and Trac.

I have created the wizard as first step.

On what kind of fields would it be nice to be able to query?

In the light of Eclipse I think it is useful to query on complete and incomplete and on the list in which the task is.
In the current screenshot there is also summary and description (that is also what BugZilla and Trac have currenlty). I think I will rename summary to title. Every task in RTM only has a title. You can add notes as well, that is what I will use for description. I will rename it accordingly.

After the Finish button is hit the query is saved. You can change it afterwards as well.

Remember The Milk Taskrepository

First thing to start with is creating a TaskRepository for RememberTheMilk.
In the screenshots below you can see the progress of that. Creating a Mylyn taskrepository is not that hard.
I have looked to the code of the Trac integration. That was very useful for me. I know how Trac works and how I can use the Trac integration of Mylyn.

After the settings page is filled and and validated the repository is created.
The validation does also check whether the passed credentials are correct or not.

Local tasks

In Eclipse Mylyn you are able to create tasks in a remote repository like a BugZilla repository or a Trac repository. But for you personal tasks you don’t want to fill up that repository with your personal ToDo items.
Mylyn supports local tasks, but these tasks only exists in that single workspace.

Remember The Milk has a perfect way of saving an organizing your personal tasks even for business.

With the plugin for Mylyn I want to bring this together.

The main benefits I see now:

You will have local/personal tasks which you can have in multiple workspace
You can add tasks from every where and these tasks will appear in your Eclipse environment as well and visa versa.
You still have to option to share these tasks with RememberTheMilk if you like to. Your wife or friend can add or share tasks with you. You will read them in Eclipse.

Next time I will show the first screenshots of the integration.

Remember the milk or anything else. It is very easy to forget anything. There is a wonderful website call http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ which can help you to remember the things you need to do.

Next to that there is Mylyn: task based working in Eclipse. Working with Mylyn is great.

Now I though ‘let’s bring them together’. That is what I am working on right now.
